I agree on romantic. However, after clearing out the house of three elderly brothers when the last of them donated the lot to a historical society, I have to say it's cleaner. Some of the big ( And I do mean big. We had to take a window out to remove the bottom part of one bookcase. )furniture hadn't been moved since 1914. We all looked like coal miners.
Yes, the old steam engines begrimed much of south Toledo terribly. That was the source of the black layer that made IC (and St. Anthony's) so foreboding.
