Rutherford B. Hayes
The presidential inauguration of Northwest Ohio's Rutherford B. Hayes, on March 5, 1877. Hayes had secretly taken the oath of office two days earlier, in fear of unrest. He lost the popular vote to Democrat Samuel Tilden by about a quarter million votes, and lost the electoral vote as well. However the results from four states were contested and the Republican-controlled Congress set up an Electoral Commission to decide the winner.Needless to say, the Republican Hayes became president, in spite of having lost the election.
