Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

The Lucas County Courthouse, in Toledo. This odd sort of long-necked griffin seems to be balancing a fountain on its nose. The French Royal Arms, below, are in honor of the first European rulers of Northwest Ohio.

Woodlawn Cemetery, Norwalk, Ohio

Cemeteries have never a dull moment. There's always something to see. Notice the blind arcades, at the sides.

United Church of Christ, Sycamore, Ohio

The battlements are nice and I like the porch. The tracery, in the window, is an interesting pattern.
That said, I hate the blocky layout of this sort of Protestant church with a passion. If this were a school or a library it would work. As a church, it shows the ass-backward focus of Protestantism. There's a sanctuary, of sorts, in there somewhere, but it's not obvious from the outside. The focus isn't on worship, it's on yapping and indoctrination. The "education" section overwhelms what would be the central feature in a real church, rather than an "ecclesial community".
A very nice building, with good details, but as a church, it misses the target.

St. Christopher Church, Rocky River, Ohio

Impressive. I particularly like the baptistry at the side.
The sanctuary's way too stark, but those arches, and the coffered ceiling are very good.

Old Post Office, Tiffin, Ohio

Magnificent building. In spite of the Greek details, it has an almost Egyptian feel to it. Let's compromise and say it would fit right in at Ptolemaic Alexandria.

Immaculate Conception Church, Old South End, Toledo

Stay Tuned

I'll post more, this evening. There's a substantial backlog to catch up. I also need to get around to adding some local links.

Ritz Theater, Tiffin, Ohio

Look at that cornice!
Far too few of these have survived.

My Favorite Toledo Business

Architectural Artifacts, in the Warehouse District. Have a look at the website. Their inventory is fantastic. The resident cats are a plus, in my opinion.

Weeds or Flowers?

Sometimes, that depends on how you look at it.
Some people would see this as an ugly vacant lot, on Lotus Street, in Toledo's Old South End.
As far as I'm concerned, tidy it up a bit, add paths and a bench and you'd have a tolerable garden.

The Maumee River Monster

If you're drunk or gullible, that's what it looks like. If you're sober and sensible, you'll realize it's a tree.

"Trulight Cathedral Global Ministries"!!!

Whoop-de-fucking-whoo! Why is it that so many tiny "ecclesial communities" that don't extend beyond the limits of one town often use the words "global" or "international"?
Still, it's a nice building, in Toledo's Old South End. The entrance is very good, if you ignore the pompous sign.

Old South End/Warehouse District

Right around the border. The building on the right is interesting. Looks like a brewery, many of which had that sort of multi-story, vaguely Romanesque, brick design.
