THAT, is what's called a trompette en chamade, or Spanish trumpet. It works from an organ stop that's so loud it will blow you away. The sound is rather like a trumpet blast. I heard it at close range on a Gabriel Kney organ, back in Pennsylvania.
It was built at the same time as Bethel and while I don't know who the architect(s) was, it does have quite a similar design (check out Epiphany Lutheran for more of the same). But Monroe St. UM is bigger and the windows are literal works of art.
And yes, those trumpet pipes WILL blow you away (along with the rest of it!) The organ was recently refurbished. They've already done some concerts with it and it's breathtaking to say the least!
The picture of the sanctuary bears a striking resemblance to Bethel Lutheran!!
ReplyDeleteso wait...are those like trumpet pipes on the balcony?
